Joel and Brit both took to social media to share the incredible news along with a message of hope for other couples who may also be experiencing difficulties in having a baby.
Brit made the announcement on social media after posting a photo of herself and Joel holding a baby-sized Geelong guernsey with Selwood's number 14 and 'Dad' written on it.
“Our dreams have come true,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Joel and I are grateful to be able to share that we have a little one coming into the world. We couldn’t do this announcement without acknowledging those who are struggling with infertility or loss.
“I know how much my heart would break every time I saw a pregnancy post and my heart truly goes out to you if that’s how you’re feeling right now. These past few years have changed me forever.
“For anyone who has lost hope right now, I’ve been there and I’m thinking of you, and I hope one day soon, you get your miracle.”
Joel also posted the same photo of the happy couple to Instagram, with a similar message to his legion of followers.
He also paid tribute to the enormous strength and positivity his wife had shown amid years of adversity.
Joel and Brit Selwood's baby 'dreams come true'
“Our dreams have come true. Brit and I are grateful to be able to share we have a little one coming into the world,” he wrote.
“We look forward to being ‘Mum and Dad’ and the world changing for us in the near future.
“What I have worked out through this process is that women are amazing and my wife is a superwoman. In a journey that hasn’t been easy, we have found a way, through great support and Brit staying positive.
“To couples, who are trying, have tried or can’t have a baby for some unfair reason, we see you and are sending love and positive energy your way.
“We can’t wait to meet you Baby Selwood, you will be very loved.”
Selwood's incredible news comes ahead of Geelong's preliminary final blockbuster against the Brisbane Lions at the MCG on Friday night.
The Cats have enjoyed the week off and are one win away from a grand final, in what could be a double celebration for Selwood in 2022.
However, they will have to overcome a Lions side buoyed by their stirring 13-point upset of reigning premiers Melbourne that snapped an ugly hoodoo at the MCG.
Brisbane overcame the Demons 14.8 (92) to 11.13 (79) at a venue where they had lost their last 11 matches since 2014.
After entering this year's finals series with a 1-5 post-season record, blighted by two straight-sets exits under coach Chris Fagan, the Lions have now triumphed in two straight sudden-death thrillers.
