'Absolute bloodbath': Gruesome fight shocks UFC fans
An ‘absolute bloodbath’ fight featuring a brutal elbow that drew a flood of claret ended with neither fighter winning a UFC contract at Dana White’s Contender Series 15 on Wednesday.
Don’Tale Mayes fought Mitchell Sipe in a heavyweight bout at the company’s training centre in Las Vegas.
Sipe was actually fighting well in the early minutes before both slowed down with fatigue.
In the second round, an elbow from Mayes opened up a massive wound on Sipe’s face and blood came pouring out down the side of his face.
There's blood a flowin on #ContenderSeries. Mayes caught Sipe with an elbow & the canvas is now stained red.

Cut came from an elbow from Mayes. Sipe is a heavyweight blood sprinkler. #ContenderSeries

Sipe stayed on his feet for a few more minutes but with 11 seconds left in the middle round, Mayes jumped.
He took his rival down and finished the fight with a handful of punches in what The MMA Supplement described as “probably the bloodiest fight in a long time, with a literal puddle of blood staining the octagon afterwards”.
“It feels wonderful,” Mayes said.
“I felt good. Walking around at 270, that was slowing me down. I lost the weight, lost about 15 (pounds). I had better cardio.”
The one big problem was neither man, not even Mayes as the victor, impressed all that much.
Sipe and Mayes may as well just hug and go home. Neither of these guys is getting a contract. They could finish with a Liu Kang kick. #DWTNCS

Idk about you guys, but I’m not too impressed with this Mayes/Sipe fight.#DWTNCS #ContenderSeries

UFC president Dana White gave contracts to the other four winners on the night.
It’s only the second time in the Contender Series’ two-year history that four of the five fighters have won deals with the company.
