Cam Newton’s little brother leads Howard over UNLV in biggest upset in college football history

Quarterback Caylin Newton, the younger brother of Panthers star Cam Newton, led 45-point underdog Howard University to a 43-40 win at UNLV on Saturday, marking what is believed to be the biggest upset in the history of college football based on the betting line.

Howard’s win surpassed Stanford’s win over USC as a 40-point underdog in 2007 for the biggest-upset-ever distinction.

While no sports book in Las Vegas was offering a money-line on the Bison, they were listed at odds between 550-1 and over 700-1 offshore, according to various reports.

Caylin Newton — who at 5-11, 175 pounds does not exactly resemble his 6-5, 245-pound bother — passed for 140 yards and a touchdown and ran for 190 yards and two more scores, including what turned out to be the winning 4-yard TD run with 7:34 left.

UNLV paid Howard $600,000 to play the game at Sam Boyd Stadium, and the loss to the FCS team “threw into major doubt all the optimism coach Tony Sanchez expressed in the leadup to the season,” the Las Vegas Review-Journal wrote. The Rebels won three and four games, respectively, in Sanchez’s first two seasons at the helm.

As for Howard, perhaps the win in an indication that a comment Newton made before the season will prove prophetic.

“I mean, coming to Howard, it’s not a football school right now,” Newton said, per the Washington Post. “It will be.”
