Floyd Mayweather net worth: How much money does 'Money' make?

There are few athletes in sports who employ opulence and excess as public persona more forcefully than Floyd Mayweather. The 40-year-old boxer, nicknamed "Money," is undefeated at 49-0, and prepares to come out of retirement once again to fight MMA star Conor McGregor in summer 2017's biggest sports event — and perhaps the biggest event since the long-awaited Pacquiao-Mayweather clash in May 2015.

Mayweather constantly shows off his wealth in Instagram photos of him holding stacks of cash. How much does 'Money' Mayweather actually make and what is his net worth?

What is Floyd Mayweather's net worth?

Mayweather's net worth is somewhere between $340 million, according to Forbes in late 2016, and $400 million this year, according to CelebrityNetWorth.com. Forbes also reports that Mayweather was the highest-paid athlete in the world each year from 2012 to 2016.

Surprisingly, Mayweather is absent from Forbes' 2017 list of the 100 highest-paid athletes in the world. This list, however, likely considered Mayweather retired. In 2015, Mayweather was on top of the list.

What businesses does Mayweather own?

Mayweather's nickname wasn't always "Money." That started with the birth of his current promotions company.

Mayweather broke away from Top Rank, a boxing promotions company, in 2006 and started Mayweather Promotions. He changed his nickname from "Pretty Boy" to "Money," and Mayweather Promotions would later be known as "The Money Team," a moniker Mayweather trademarked in June 2017 along with "TBE," as in "The Best Ever."

How much has Mayweather made in career earnings?

Mayweather has earned about $700 million in prize money from fights during his career, Forbes estimates.

After Mayweather's blockbuster win over Manny Pacquiao in 2015, Mayweather made about $180 million, according to The Telegraph.

What about Mayweather's rumored tax trouble?

The amount Mayweather owes in taxes hasn't been reported, but Mayweather indeed owes the IRS and is reportedly using the upcoming McGregor fight to make enough money to pay off the delinquent tax bill.

Forbes reported that Mayweather petitioned the IRS to delay the collection of those taxes until after his fight agaisnt McGregor.

"Although [Mayweather] has substantial assets, those assets are restricted and primarily illiquid," reads Mayweather's petition. "The taxpayer has a significant liquidity event scheduled in about 60 days from which he intends to pay the balance of the 2015 tax liability due and outstanding."

It appears Mayweather has done this before, too. After a 2009 fight Mayweather won over Juan Manuel Marquez, Mayweather paid a $1.67 million lien from his 2007 taxes. He looks to be doing the same in 2017 with his fight against McGregor.

“It’s fight, get the money, spend the money, fight. Fight, get the money, spend the money, fight," rapper 50 Cent was quoted as saying in regard to Mayweather's approach to spending. 50 Cent previously spent time as a business partner with Mayweather.

Mayweather's second return from retirement comes with even more anticipation than his 2015 fight with Manny Pacquiao. This time, Mayweather is an overwhelming favorite to defeat MMA superstar Conor McGregor. He is in line for a huge payday with a win, and Mayweather has suggested he'll make around $300 million from the fight.

For reference, the purse for the Pacquiao bout was $300 million with the same PPV price. It had been estimated that Mayweather won about $180 million from that fight. At closer to $300 million, Mayweather should be able to easily pay off his outstanding taxes.
