Boston president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced Sunday following a 3-2 loss to the Angels that top prospect Rafael Devers will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Boston recently released free-agent bust Pablo Sandoval, who battled injuries, weight struggles and ineffectiveness while in a Red Sox uniform.

The Red Sox are still leading the American League East, but the Yankees and Rays are within shouting distance. Third base has been a problem for the Red Sox in recent seasons — Dombrowski probably wishes they had kept Travis Shaw — but Devers provides some hope for the future.

Devers, 20, had a .305/.373/.575 slash line with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs across two minor league levels this season. He is expected to split time at third base with Deven Marrero.
