Top pitching prospect Luke Heimlich goes undrafted after sex offender status revealed

Luke Heimlich, the ace left-handed pitcher for top-ranked Oregon State, went from a first-round prospect to undrafted after it was revealed he is a registered sex offender.

According to documents obtained by The Oregonian, Heimlich pleaded guilty to a single charge of sexually molesting a 6-year-old female family member when he was 15. He was ordered to register as a Level 1 sex offender in Washington and was put on probation for two years.

Heimlich recently missed his annual update to the Benton County sex offender registry, which made his case available in Oregon court records for the first time. Oregon law requires juveniles who were convicted of a sex crime in another state to register as a sex offender if the crime is a felony in Oregon.

Yahoo Sports reported multiple MLB teams dropped the 21-year-old junior from their draft boards completely after his sex offender status came to light.

Heimlich posted a 0.76 ERA over 118 1/3 innings this season for the Beavers, who open the College World Series on Saturday against Cal State Fullerton. It’s unclear whether or not Heimlich will pitch; he opted to sit out the Beavers' super regional win over Vanderbilt last weekend.
