Olympic runners blow victory in hilarious marathon finish

It's not over until it's over, or so they say.

Two Canadian Olympians completely ignored that advice on the weekend in the 10-kilometre Barbados Marathon event.

Lanni Marchant and Natasha Wodak were mere metres away from claiming a one-two finish when the pair locked hands and raised their arms in celebration.

Only they forgot to account for their competition.

Trinidad and Tobago runner Tonya Nero, seeing what was unfolding in front of her, found a last wind and sprinted past the Canadians.

Nero's calm face was in stark contrast to the disbelief of Marchant and Wodak, who were so shocked that they appeared to scream in disappointment as they realised what had happened.

"It was good. I was settling for third place. When I realised that they were going at the same pace, I just went for it," Nero told the Barbados Advocate.

Wodak and Marchant would go on to finish first and third respectively in the half-marathon the next day.

It's likely, however, that this embarrassing moment will live in their memory far longer.
