Aussie athletes turn tourists after end to competition

The competition may be over for Australia’s swimmers and many of our other athletes, but they seem to be coping just fine.

Newly crowned Olympic champions Mack Horton and Kyle Chalmers have been busy soaking in the sights of Rio de Janeiro, happy to swap their swimming caps for their tourist hats.

“It’s nice to finally get out and actually experience Rio, Horton told 7 News.

Signing autographs and posing for photos, the pair admits their newfound hero status is hard to come to terms with.

“I’m pretty shocked about how the week went and didn’t think it was possible, so really happy with it, Chalmers said.

But while many of our stars are lapping up their time in Brazil, others such as rowing gold medalist Kim Brennan, are longing for a return home to Australia.

“I miss my husband,” Brennan laughed.

“Definitely looking forward to getting home and seeing Scott and taking our dog Ernie for a walk.”
