Local hope's heartbreaking crash in opening run

Home crowd spurring you on, opening run in your only event, then this happens.

South Korean moguls skier Seo Jung Hwa suffered an unfortunate stack in the first qualifying round at Bokwang Phoenix Park on Friday, leaving local fans disappointed in PyeongChang.

Seo was greeted with huge cheers before her run but the 27-year-old fell before the final jump and finished in last place.

"That's desperately unlucky," commentators said.

Seo cut a disappointed figure as she completed the rest of the course, earning a score of 16.57.

However she will get a chance to redeem herself in the repechage on Sunday, with the top-20 skiers making the final.

Seo wasn't the only athlete to stack on Friday, with Norway's Vinjar Slatten also falling in the men's event.

Slatten slid all the way across the finish line after tumbling off the final jump, before suffering the ignominy of having to struggle back up the hill to retrieve one of his skis.

Aussie competitors Britt Cox and Matt Graham automatically qualified for the finals, with Cox sixth in the women's and Graham ninth in the ninth.
