England's World Cup heroics snubbed for Federer-Djokovic epic

The epic Wimbledon final between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer was the must-see sporting event on a drama filled day in London last Sunday, according to TV ratings.

Sport fans were treated to a range of options last Sunday with SW19 final, World Cup final and the British GP all taking place.

Djokovic’s insane four hour and 57 minute victory over 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer attracted a peak TV audience of 9.6 million people in the UK on the BBC.

This is compared to the 7.9 million peak audience that watched the drama of England defeat New Zealand in a super over at the World Cup final.

The peak audience for a sporting event in the UK this year still remains England’s semi-final defeat by the USA in the Women’s World Cup. This attracted a peak audience of 11.7 million.

In Australia, on average up to 274,000 people were watching the Wimbledon final despite it finishing around 4am.

This was higher than the cricket final.

In the US, ESPN estimated up to 4.6 million homes were watching the final at its peak. The match had an average of three million households viewing the tennis.

This is the third-highest tennis match audience ever after the 2012 final between Federer and Andy Murray, and the Williams sisters’ quarterfinal at the 2015 US Open.
