Wimbledon 2024: Harriet Dart out after third-round defeat in three sets to Wang Xinyu

Harriet Dart let a one-set lead slip to crash out of Wimbledon in the third round with a 6-2, 5-7, 3-6 defeat to Wang Xinyu of China.

Emma Raducanu, who faces New Zealand’s Lulu Sun, is now the only British singles player left in the 2024 Championships.

Dart had been due face the winner of Saturday’s afternoon’s Centre Court clash between two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur and 21st seed Elina Svitolina if she had won, but Wang recovered from a set down to make the fourth round in her stead.

Dart, the world No100, had to endure a rain-disrupted match on Court 2 and couldn’t ultimately register a sizeable scalp, losing to 42nd-ranked Wang in front of an enthused crowd on Court 2.

A break down in the second set, Wang broke back and from then on was able to put Dart under serious pressure in all of her service games, proving a deserved winner against the 27-year-old from Hampstead.

However, the third round marked a joint-best Grand Slam run for Dart, who also reached the Wimbledon third round back in 2019.

On Thursday, Dart knocked out 32nd seed and British No1 Katie Boulter in a final-set tiebreak in the second round on Thursday, having begun her run at SW19 with victory over Zhuoxuan Bai of China in straight sets in the first round on Tuesday.

Speaking as a BBC pundit after the match, former British No1 Johanna Konta said: “Wang Xinyu just did enough and she dealt with the occasion better.

“She waited for the opportunity and it is just really unfortunate for Harriet Dart because she did so many things well.”
