Wimbledon 2022 Day 6: Nick Kyrgios advances, Rafael Nadal wins, Iga Swiatek's streak ends, Coco Gauff falls

Nick Kyrgios defeats Stefanos Tsitsipas in drama-filled match

It was contentious at times, theatrical at others, but Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas provided the best match of the day Saturday. In a knock-down, drag-out match, it was Kyrgios who came out ahead, winning in four sets.

The match had everything: Arguments with officials, swearing, underhand serves, outbursts, vindictive anger-fueled smashes, code violations and balls angrily being hit into the stands.

What started as a tennis match quickly devolved into an Oscar-worthy drama. Kyrgios played the role of the villain perfectly, arguing with the official, calling a line judge a "snitch" and getting under Tsitsipas' skin.

Kyrgios' antics did not work initially. Though the first set went back and forth, it was Tsitsipas who came out on top 7-6.

By the second set, however, Kyrgios' theatrics finally got to Tsitsipas. Things came to a head when Tsitsipas, in a moment of frustration, angrily sent a ball into the stands. Kyrgios refused to play until Tsitsipas received a default. Kyrgios called for "all the supervisors." Tsitsipas did not default, but Kyrgios won the second set 6-4.

Tsitsipas continued to allow his frustrations to boil over in the third set. He angrily smashed balls at Kyrgios out of anger. Tsitsipas eventually received a code violation for launching a ball during live play.

Kyrgios, meanwhile, reveled in Tsitsipas' emotions. Kyrgios mixed in a few underhand serves, something he tweeted about Friday.

He also played to the crowd, taking a bow after picking up a point after the ball bounced off the net and landed on Tsitsipas' side.

Kyrgios went on to take the third set 6-3.

Tsitsipas recovered some of his composure in the fourth set, which went to a tiebreak. Kyrgios eventually came out on top, winning the set and the match 7-6.

The win pushes Kyrgios into the fourth round, where he'll face Brandon Nakashima.

Rafael Nadal wins in straight sets over Lorenzo Sonego

Rafael Nadal advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon with a win over Lorenzo Sonego on Saturday. Nadal defeated Sonego in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Nadal was in control early, at one point winning nine straight games. Sonego gave Nadal some trouble in the final set, but Nadal still emerged victorious to take the match.

Following the action, the two met at the net to discuss something. The conversation initially appeared contentious, though it seemed like both players were amicable by the end. Nadal denied that things were "spicy" after the match.

With the win, Nadal will face Botic van de Zandschulp in the fourth round.

Iga Swiatek's incredible streak comes to an end against Alize Cornet

After 37 straight wins, Iga Swiatek's incredible streak is over. Alize Cornet took down Swiatek in the third round of Wimbledon in straight sets Saturday.

The first set was back and forth, as Cornet and Swiatek traded points. Cornet eventually came out ahead, winning the set 6-4. Cornet kept up the pressure in the second set, and Swiatek could not respond. She made uncharacteristic errors, failing to capitalize on easy scoring opportunities. Those mistakes continued as the match went on, leading to Cornet taking the second set, and the match, 6-2.

With the win, Cornet will face Ajla Tomljanovic in the fourth round. For Swiatek, the loss marks the end of an incredible streak, which saw Swiatek win 37 straight matches. That run tied the longest win streak in women's tennis in 32 years.

Coco Gauff falls to Amanda Anisimova

Coco Gauff looked to continue her strong run after making it the finals of the French Open, but Amanda Anisimova had other plans. In a battle of the Americans, it was Anisimova, 20, who came out on top. She defeated Gauff in three sets 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the fourth round of the tournament.

Anisimova came out fired up in the first set, pushing Gauff to a tiebreak. Gauff came out on top, but Anisimova proved getting past her wasn't going to be easy. She seemed to get stronger as the match went on, defeating Gauff 6-2 in the second set and 6-1 in the final set.

With the win, advanced to the fourth round of the tournament. She will take on Harmony Tan in the round of 16.

Jessica Pegula falls to Petra Martic in third round

Upsets ruled the day on the women's side of the bracket. American Jessica Pegula is out of Wimbledon after losing to Petra Martic in straight sets in the third round.

Martic got out to a strong start, taking the first set 6-2. Pegula tried to battle back in the second set, forcing a tiebreak. Martic proved too much to handle, winning the tiebreak and the match, 7-6. Pegula entered Wimbledon as the No. 8 seed. Following Saturday's upsets, No. 3 seed Ons Jabeur and No. 4 seed Paula Badosa remain the top women left at Wimbledon.

American men see mixed results in third round at Wimbledon

The remaining American men saw mixed results in the third round at Wimbledon. Brandon Nakashima's run continued. The American advanced to the fourth round, winning in straight sets against Daniel Elahi Galan. Taylor Fritz also advanced, taking down Alex Molcan in straight sets. Jenson Brooksby fell to Cristian Garin on Saturday. Garin dispatched Brooksby in four sets (6-2, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4). Jack Sock's run also came to an end. Sock fell to Jason Kubler in a match that went the distance. Sock had 23 aces in the contest, but could not overcome Kubler in the final two sets.

Other notable results

• Paula Badosa advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon after a victory over Petra Kvitova on Saturday. Badosa defeated Kvitova in straight sets 7-5, 7-6 to take the win. Following Saturday's upsets, Badosa remains one of the top women left in the tournament. She will take on Simona Halep in the fourth round, which will take place Monday.

• Barbora Krejcikova was upset by Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round Saturday. Krejcikova jumped out to an early lead, taking the first set 6-2, but couldn't not keep up the pressure. Tomljanovic took the next two sets 6-4 and 6-3 to advance to the fourth round.

• Botic van de Zandschulp advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon with a win over Richard Gasquet. va de Zandschulp needed four sets to dispatch Gasquet (7-5, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1). van de Zandschulp's serve was on during the match, as he registered 19 aces on his way to the win.

• Simona Halep had no trouble advancing to the fourth round at Wimbledon. Halep, the No. 16 seed, dispatched Magdalena Frech in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.

• Harmony Tan continued her impressive run at Wimbledon with a dominant win over Katie Boulter in the third round. Tan dispatched Boulter in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-1. Tan, who defeated Serena Williams in the first round, will look to continue her impressive run when she takes on Anisimova on Sunday.
