Federer seals 19th slam with insane feat of perfection

Roger Federer has claimed a record eighth Wimbledon crown, but none of the others have ever been this dominant.

The Swiss legend took his grand slam tally to 19 without dropping a set all tournament, something he's never achieved before at the All England Club.

EIGHTH AND LAST? Federer coy on Wimbledon swansong

In fact, he's only achieved the rare accomplishment once before in his glittering career - at the 2007 Australian Open when in his absolute pomp.

The only other player to win Wimbledon wuthout dropping a set was Bjorn Borg some 40 years ago.

A month shy of his 36th birthday, Federer eclipsed the Wimbledon record he shared with legends Pete Sampras and Wlliam Renshaw with a crushing 6-3 6-1 6-4 triumph over wounded Marin Cilic to become the oldest champion at The All England Club since 1930.

Merciless and majestic in equal parts, Federer's stirring victory ended a five-year Wimbledon title wait and came 14 years after he first reigned on London's hallowed lawns in 2003.

Incredibly, after needing six months off after sustaining a career-threatening knee injury in last year's semi-final loss to Milos Raonic, Federer now holds two grand slam trophies for the first time since 2009.

"It's disbelief that I can reach such heights," Federer said.

"I was never sure if I was going to be back here in another final, but I always believed that I could come back and do it again.

"It means the world to me, just feeling great and holding the trophy."

The resurgent 19-times grand slam champion will now head to New York next month chasing a 20th major as a 36-year-old father of four.
