New Zealand selectors have picked experienced opener Martin Guptill in their 13-man squad for the T20 series against Australia, despite lack of form and a lingering hamstring injury.
Kane Williamson will lead the Black Caps after overcoming his own injury, inflammation in his elbow.
The trans-Tasman rivals have opted for different selection strategies for the five-game series.
Australia have taken 18 players to Aotearoa, and are currently quarantining in Christchurch where they'll play the opener on February 22.
Coach Andrew McDonald is without Test stars and has signalled his intent to rotate players and shuffle his lineup around, using the series as a fact-finding mission ahead of October's World Cup.
New Zealand, in contrast, are in it to win it.
"We've got a series to win. We'd like to beat Australia," selector Gavin Larsen said on Sunday.
"I would fully envisage we pick our best XI for game one."
Whether or not that includes Guptill will depend on how he responds to treatment this week.
The 34-year-old missed the final two matches of NZ's domestic T20 season, which concluded on Saturday, and previously struggled for form this season.
Finn Allen, 21, who helped steer the Wellington Firebirds to the title, has been named on standby should Guptill not come up.
Larsen said he was tempted to throw Allen into the squad after the young top-order batsman amassed a series-high 512 runs in the competition.
"Martin's our incumbent opener and our highest T20 international run scorer so we're backing him to do the job at the top of the order," Larsen said.
"He will need to prove his fitness and it's good to know we have a ready replacement in Finn on standby."
Williamson will lead the side, batting at three, with Devon Conway, who top-scored in Saturday's Super Smash final, at four.
The Johannesburg-born batsman celebrated his knock of 93 off 63 by heading to a wedding of one of his best friends after the match.
