Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is facing increasing calls for his head from Manchester United fans after Sunday's disappointing 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at OId Trafford.

United sit ninth on 18 points from their opening 14 games, taking just two points from successive matches against newly-promoted sides. It is their worst start to a campaign since 1988-89.

"The league table at this point is not the biggest concern because it is so tight," said the Norwegian after the game.

They have won just six of 22 matches since Solskjaer was handed the reins on a permanent basis, and are already eight points adrift in the battle for the top four.

Solskjaer's situation is made worse by the fact Mauricio Pochettino, who was the overwhelming first choice to succeed Mourinho at Old Trafford in December, is now available after being dismissed by Tottenham.

There is a determination to give Solskjaer time to prove he is the man to lead United back to the summit of English football, but Pochettino looms large over the current boss.

Manchester United also have recent form for removing their manager after falling out of the early running for a Champions League spot. Mourinho was axed just under 12 months ago after picking up 26 points from 17 matches, leaving United 11 points off the top-four pace.

Solskjaer will need to win his next three against Tottenham, Manchester City and Everton to better that record.
