Sociedad lose ground at home to Villarreal

Villarreal have claimed a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad in Spain's La Liga

Real Sociedad have had their five-match unbeaten run halted in a 2-1 home loss to Villarreal in the Spanish La Liga, losing ground in their race for a Champions League spot.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are tied at the top with 40 points each, ahead of Atletico Madrid with Sevilla fourth - four points ahead of Sociedad.

Willian Jose broke the deadlock after 22 minutes for Sociedad in San Sebastian but Villarreal's Manu Trigueros equalised from the penalty spot after Igor Zubeldia felled Samuel Chukwueze.

Former Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla drilled home with 18 minutes to go to earn victory for the visitors.

"Now we can dream of Europe," Villarreal coach Javier Calleja said. "I am very optimistic, I always think the future will be good and we can do no more than believe.

"We'll have to fight for it, but with our feet on the ground because there is the whole second half of the season to come and to win we have to do a lot of things right.

"We have goals, talent, and know how to attack (but we have to) improve the defensive aspect to be more convincing."

Struggling Celta Vigo were held 1-1 by Osasuna thanks to Chimy Avila's late equaliser.

Aidoo hit the crossbar for the hosts at Balaidos with Ruben Garcia striking the post at the other end in an even first half.

Santi Mina sent Celta ahead when he beat Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera to a low through ball and rolled home in the 75th minute.

However Avila's explosive diving header levelled the scores eight minutes later, to leave Celta 17th, level on 15 points with 18th-place Mallorca.

Granada beat Mallorca 1-0 thanks to Angel Montoro's goal, but the midfielder later went off injured, having only just returned from a muscle problem. The victory sent Granada 10th.

Real Betis and Alaves shared a 1-1 draw, with Emerson cancelling out Aleix Vidal's opener, while the visitors at Mendizorroza saw Zouhair Feddal sent off in the second half.
