Aston Villa's Premier League match with Tottenham Hotspur, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed because of the club's ongoing battle with coronavirus.

"Due to the number of players and staff who have either tested positive for COVID-19 or have been placed in isolation by the club, the Premier League had no other option than to reschedule the game," the Premier League said in a statement on Monday.

Tottenham will play now play Fulham this Wednesday instead, a match originally set for December 30 but called off then because of coronavirus positive tests among the visiting squad.

Fulham's match against Chelsea was as a result moved from Friday to Saturday, and Villa's match against Everton from Saturday to Sunday.

It comes as the Premier League announced 36 people had tested positive to COVID-19 in the past week.

A total of 207 individuals have now tested positive for the coronavirus since the top English league kicked off.

The United Kingdom has recorded more than 3 million confirmed COVID-19 cases and more than 81,000 deaths.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new national lockdown last week due to surging infections in the country caused by a new variant of the virus, but the Premier League will be allowed to continue.
