Dramatic security vision has been released of the frightening moment a man in a wheelchair plunged backwards onto train tracks at a Melbourne station.

Dramatic security vision has been released of the frightening moment a man in a wheelchair plunged backwards onto train tracks at a Melbourne station.

The incident happened at Middle Brighton train station, shortly after midday on Sunday.

In CCTV video, released by Metro, a man in a wheelchair, who is believed to be a Dutch tourist, can be seen moving along the platform.

Then, moments later, he turns away from the tracks, before rolling backwards - and crashing hard onto the tracks.

Within seconds, a young woman races in, jumping onto the tracks to his aid.

Soon, she is joined by a group of commuters who jump off the platform to help.

Together, they remove the man's wheelchair, then hoist him back up to safety.

The man's ordeal was made all the more frightening by the realization that a train was due to arrive, where he fell, within minutes.

Fortunately, he escaped with relatively minor injuries to his neck and arm.
