US Open 2021: Rogers stuns No. 1 Ash Barty, Djokovic advances to fourth round

Day 5 of the US Open put the favorites on notice. Both Naomi Osaka and Stefanos Tsitsipas fell in shocking upsets during Friday's games.

With the field thinning out, Day 6 opens up the potential for even more upsets as the competition dwindles. Both No. 1 ranked players — Novak Djokovic and Ashleigh Barty — will continue play Saturday. They'll be joined by women's No. 4 Karolina Pliskova and women's No. 6 Bianca Andreescu. On the men's side, No. 4 Alexander Zverev and No. 6 Matteo Berrettini will look to advance to the fourth round of the US Open.

Rogers knocks off Ash Barty

The world’s top-ranked tennis player has fallen.

Shelby Rogers knocked off No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in the third round of the US Open on Saturday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium in a thrilling third-set tiebreak 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Rogers — now the last American woman left standing in the Grand Slam — came out hot after dropping the initial game, winning the next three to take a quick lead on Saturday night. Though Barty took a dominant game 5, Rogers made easy work of the next three to close it out.

In the second set, however, Barty reminded the world why she’s earned that top ranking.

Barty won five straight games with ease after splitting the first two with Rogers to even things up and force a third set — which she then took a 5-2 lead in right away, and seemed poised to move into the fourth round.

Rogers, however, then rattled off four straight wins to stun Barty and eventually land in a tiebreaker, which she won on a pair of Barty forced errors to end the just more than two-hour match.

Rogers will now take on the United Kingdom’s Emma Raducanu in the fourth round. Raducanu beat Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets earlier on Saturday.

Djokovic cruises past Nishikori

Though he stumbled slightly early on Saturday afternoon, Novak Djokovic got his act together and is another step closer to history at the US Open.

Djokovic rallied to beat Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in his third round match, marking his 17th straight win over Nishikori and his 14th straight trip to the fourth round at the US Open.

Djokovic is eying the calendar year Grand Slam with a win in New York, which would make him the first man to do so since Rod Laver did 52 years ago.

Djokovic will now take on either Aslan Karastev or Jenson Brooksby in the fourth round. Those two are set to square off later on Saturday.

Petra Kvitová upset by Maria Sakkari in round three

Maria Sakkari would not be denied in the third round of the US Open. Despite being the lower seed, Sakkari pulled off an upset win over Petra Kvitová in straight sets Saturday.

Sakkari's serve was on point during the match, as she notched 9 aces against Kvitová, who ended the match with 5 aces. Though Kvitová struggled against Sakkari's serve, Kvitová didn't go down without a fight. She made things close in the first set, dropping it 6-4. Kvitová dropped the second set 6-3, giving Sakkari the win.

The victory will pit Sakkari against Bianca Andreescu, who defeated Greet Minnen on Saturday. Andreescu and Sakkari will play Monday.

Zverev advances after Sock retires

Alexander Zverev made it into the fourth round of the US Open on Friday night after his opponent, Jack Sock, retired in the fourth set due to an injury.

Zverev, after falling 3-6 in the first seat, rallied back to take the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3. He was up 2-1 in the fourth set when Sock ended the match. The American had been dealing with a groin injury, and struggled with it in the second set.

Zverev will now advance to take on Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the fourth round.

Matteo Berrettini pulls off late win over Ilya Ivashka

The No. 6 ranked men's player was pushed to the brink by Ilya Ivashka, but eventually pulled out a win to advance to the fourth round of the US Open on Saturday.

Berrettini looked to be in trouble early, dropping the first set to Ivashka 7-6. Berrettini rebounded from there, winning the next two sets 6-2, 6-4, but Ivashka rallied in the fourth set, winning 6-2.

With his back against the wall, Berrettini pulled off the win in the final set 6-3. The victory pushes Berrettini into the fourth round of the tournament. He'll take on Oscar Otte in that match, which will take place Monday.

Bianca Andreescu advances to fourth round of US Open

Bianca Andreescu didn't need long to put away Greet Minnen in the third round of the US Open on Saturday. Andreescu defeated Minnen in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) to advance to the fourth round of the tournament.

The win continues a strong showing from Andreescu. After dropping a set in her first-round matchup against Viktorija Golubic, Andreescu has not dropped a set in her next three matches.

With the win, Andreescu's next match will come Monday. She will take on Maria Sakkari, who defeated Petra Kvitová on Saturday.

Other notable wins: Bencic pushes past Pegula

Belinda Bencic is heading to the fourth round of the US Open. Bencic defeated American Jessica Pegula in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) to move forward in the tournament. Bencic will take on the winner of Iga Swiatek and Anett Kontaveit on Monday.
