Brahimaj lost to Max Griffin via TKO in their welterweight bout after being caught with a vicious elbow in the third round.

The victory handed Griffin a victory that stopped a run of two consecutive defeats for the Californian fighter.

Griffin's devastating blow left his 27-year-old opponent with a gruesome gash around his ear, which looked as if it was hanging on by a thread.

Video and images of the sickening injury quickly spread on social media, leaving queasy viewers mortified by the sight of the Texan's ear half-peeled off his face.

Many fans described it as one of the grossest injuries the sport has ever seen, with some calling it the stuff of "nightmares".

UFC president Dana White even tweeted an image of the injury to promote the upcoming fight card, accompanying his post with a vomit emoji.

It summed up the general feeling for most viewers on social media.
