A driver has been charged with allegedly causing a horror car crash which killed two child passengers in Sydney’s south.

The young boys died after the blue WRX they were in slammed into a tree on The Grand Pde in Monterey just before 10pm on Friday.

The boys were treated at the scene before being taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital where they died a short time later.

The driver, a 33-year-old man, suffered serious injuries in the crash.

A young girl was also in the car and suffered minor injuries.

The driver was taken to St George Hospital where he remained on Saturday under police guard.

Police on Saturday afternoon charged the man while he was still in hospital.

The man, from Beverly Hills, faces two counts of dangerous driving causing death and one count of causing bodily harm by misconduct.

He will appear in court via a bedside hearing on Sunday.

NSW Police Crash Investigations Unit Detective Inspector Jason Hogan described the incident as “a particularly nasty crash”.

Local police were quick to establish a crime scene following the horror collision.

CCTV footage from a nearby property which revealed the final moments before the fatal collision was widely shared on Saturday.

In the video, a car is seen losing control and slamming sideways into the tree before residents and passers-by rush to help.

A neighbour told the ABC he was drawn to the crash site after the sound of a “massive bang” and had helped a girl out of the vehicle.

Detective Inspector Hogan previously said investigators would pursue multiple lines of inquiry, including whether or not the vehicle was street racing.

He emphasised the investigation was only in its early stages but said that speed may have contributed to the tragedy.

“That will be a significant line of inquiry for our crash investigators to establish the speed of the vehicle and that appears to be, at this time, a contributing factor,” Inspector Hogan said.

Officers were also on Saturday looking for a grey-silver sedan, which they believe was travelling in another lane around the time of the collision.

“We’d like to speak to the driver of the silver vehicle to establish what they saw and any actions that may or may not have been undertaken,” Detective Inspector Hogan said.

It is understood the driver of the grey sedan continued driving after the crash.

On Saturday, glass and debris could seen still be seen at the scene and some flowers were placed at the site.
