Turkington's title hopes slip away at Silverstone

Northern Ireland driver Colin Turkington's hopes of winning the British Touring Car Championship are all but over after a mixed penultimate round at Silverstone.

Turkington was fifth and second in the opening two races to boost his hopes, but he failed to finish the third race as he aquaplaned in torrential wet conditions, which caused the race to be halted with a red flag.

The Team BMW driver is 66 points now off leader Jake Hill, with a maximum of 67 points available at the final round of the season at Brands Hatch on 6 October.

Four-time champion Turkington's BMW team-mate Hill, who won race two, leads the standings by two points over Tom Ingram, who triumphed in races one and three, with reigning champion Ash Sutton 35 points adrift.

There was disappointment for Chris Smiley, who was another driver caught out in the torrential rain in race three after starting on pole position.

Smiley slid wide on lap three and recovered after the red flag to finish in 16th place.

The Restart Racing driver had earlier scored the best result of his season with sixth place in race two, after a 13th-place finish in race one.

Toyota Speedworks driver Andrew Watson ninth, 15th and 14th in the three wet races.
