HBO has reportedly delayed the release of True Detective: Night Country until January 2024.

Originally due out later in the year, the fourth entry in this stylishly dark crime anthology – which kicked off with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson's acclaimed series nine years ago – Night Country finds Jodie Foster's Detective Liz Danvers trying to get to the bottom of an Alaskan research station mystery.

TVLine first broke the news of its rollout change.

"When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace," teased an official synopsis.

"To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice."

Kali Reis plays Evangeline Navarro. Doctor Who favourite Christopher Eccleston, Killing Eve's Fiona Shaw, Deadwood star John Hawkes, Finn Bennett of The Nevers, and The Grizzlies actress Anna Lambe also appear in various roles. Issa López replaces Nic Pizzolatto as head writer.

Many TV shows have followed the same path in light of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA union strikes, with network bosses keen to push back their programmes due to a lack of promotion from talent.

Disney's Bob Iger vowed to bring the situation to a close just last month, commenting: "It is my fervent hope that we quickly find solutions to the issues that have kept us apart these past few months. And I am personally committed to working to achieve this result.

"Nothing is more important to this company than its relationships with the creative community – that includes actors, writers, animators, directors and producers. I have deep respect and appreciation for all those who are vital to the extraordinary creative engine that drives this company and our industry."

True Detective: Night Country is set for release on Max in the US next year, while UK fans will be able to catch it over on NOW.
