A new striker remains a priority during the window, with Viktor Gyokeres a priority target but Victor Osimhen unlikely.

Chelsea have had no trouble agreeing deals with five already through the door and another three, in Renato Veiga, Aaron Anselmino and Caleb Wiley, set to seal moves. Spain star Dani Olmo is their next target as the Blues weigh up triggering his £50million release clause before it expires next week on July 15. Mikel Arteta believes the Premier League’s enforcement of Profit and Sustainability Rules has made clubs wary to do deals and slowed the transfer market down this summer.

Everton and Nottingham Forest were hit with points deductions last season for breaching PSR, while the likes of Newcastle were forced to frantically do deals before the end of last month to stay compliant.

Arteta believes the environment has made clubs wary about splashing the cash and it partly explains why the summer transfer window is yet to get going so far.

Man Utd confirm two coaching appointments

Manchester United have confirmed the appointments of Rene Hake and former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy to Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff.

The United boss was handed a new contract earlier this month after winning the FA Cup against Manchester City, despite the club’s links with a host of other managers.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS group have already made sweeping changes to the club’s structural set-up, appointing Omar Berrada, Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox as their new CEO, sporting director and technical director.

Van Nistelrooy, who scored 150 goals in 219 appearances for the club across a five-year spell between 2001 and 2006 during which he won a Premier League title, left his role in charge of PSV Eindhoven last year.

United have also this afternoon confirmed Donny van de Beek’s exit to Girona.

It had appeared that Arsenal were on the brink of signing Riccardo Calafiori but reports in Italy detail the sizeable gap that remains between the Gunners and Bologna to seal a deal.

Arsenal have, the report claims, so far offered £33m and a sell-on clause.

Athletic Club chief hits out over Nico Williams treatment

Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte has hit out at Barcelona and the Spanish federation (RFEF) over the handling of Nico Williams’ future.

Barcelona chief Joan Laporta claimed recently that his club can afford the 21-year-old forward’s £53m release clause, amid interest from Chelsea and Arsenal.

Williams has insisted that he wants to focus on winning Euro 2024 and his club boss has called on the national team to protect the player from questions over his future.

“Respect between all parties is fundamental, or so we see it at Athletic Club, which does not include putting players with contracts at other clubs under public pressure in order to try to sign them,” Uriarte said following Laporta’s comments.

“He has been subjected to a bombardment of questions about his future without any control.

“He is focused on playing the Euros with the RFEF, which has not been able to protect him.”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has suggested he could quit the club after an “emotional” end to the season.

The 33-year-old is only under contract for one more year on Merseyside ahead of Arne Slot’s first season in charge, after the Dutch coach took over from Jurgen Klopp in the Anfield dugout.

Speaking after Wednesday night’s Euro 2024 semi-final defeat for the Netherlands at the hands of England, Van Dijk admitted there is some doubt over his future for both club and country.

When asked by reporters post-match, he replied: “I haven't the slightest idea right now.

Arsenal yet to meet Riccardo Calafiori asking price

Another update now on Arsenal’s ongoing talks over Riccardo Calafiori.

The Gunners have been locked in negotiations with Bologna for several days as they look to reach an agreement over the highly-rated and versatile Italy defender, 22.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Arsenal have offered a total deal worth £50m, with £40m up front and add-ons, plus a sell-on clause.

However, Bologna are understood to be looking to receive £50m initially plus further add-ons as well as that aforementioned sell-on clause.

Di Marzio says that Calafiori’s agent Alessandro Lucci is currently working hard to find a compromise between the two clubs.

Bologna owe a hefty 50 per cent of the transfer fee for Calafiori to Swiss club Basel, from whom they signed the player - also linked with Chelsea, Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen, among others - last summer.

Bayern Munich have continued their summer recruitment drive under new manager Vincent Kompany by finally completing the signing of Joao Palhinha from Fulham.

The Portugal midfielder has signed a four-year contract in Bavaria and joins for an initial fee of £43.2m plus a further £4.3m in add-ons that will make it a club-record sale for Fulham, eclipsing the £40m+ departure of striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to Saudi club Al-Hilal in 2023.

It is the end of a year-long transfer saga for Bayern, who saw a deal for Palhinha collapse on deadline day last summer.

The 29-year-old now joins Michael Olise in making the move from the Premier League to the Allianz Arena.

Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares is closing in on a move to Lazio, according to the Italian club’s sporting director.

Angelo Fabiani has revealed a deal is close for an initial loan deal that will be made permanent next summer for around £7million.

“[Tavares] is a player who interests Lazio a lot,” he told a press conference on Wednesday. “There have been talks between the two clubs for an agreement that was reached yesterday.

Marseille fans and mayor demand 'shameful' Greenwood deal abandoned

Marseille’s bid to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United has sparked a huge backlash in the French city.

According to various reports, the French side have had an offer worth around £27million accepted for the 22-year-old.

Greenwood has not played for United since being suspended on January 30, 2022, over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

Mayor Benoit Payan says ir will bring "shame" to the city.

He told French radio station RMC: "Greenwood’s behaviour is unspeakable, unacceptable. Hitting his wife… I saw images that deeply shocked me. Massacring his wife in this way is unbecoming of a man and he cannot have his place on this team.

He added: "The values ​​of OM and Marseille are anything but that in fact. It’s a shame. I will ask [club president] Pablo Longoria not to recruit Greenwood. I don’t want my club to be covered with the shame of someone who hits his wife."

Tottenham are plotting a three-player swap deal with Aston Villa.

Villa rate Jacob Ramsey at £50m but could let him go, according to Football Insider, with Giovani Lo Celso heading in the other direction.

Another unnamed player is said to be on the table to sign for Spurs, although it feels like this is at the early stages still with Villa potentially reluctant to offload Ramsey.

The 30-year-old has been targeted as a back-up option for David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale but the Gunners bid, The Athletic report, falls considerably short of Wolves' valuation.

Arsenal are set to hold talks with Nico Williams’ camp over signing the Spain winger.

Athletic Club are powerless to stop the 21-year-old from leaving for £53m due to a release clause in his contract.

CaughtOffside claim PSG have already discussed signing Williams with his entourage and talks will take place soon with Arsenal and Barcelona.

Blaugrana president Joan Laporta stated yesterday that his club can afford the deal despite their financial issues with it now reported that Ansu Fati and Raphinha will be sold to raise the required funds.

Arsenal have taken teenage star Coran Madden on trial, writes Simon Collings.

The 15-year-old forward, who has already had trials at Manchester City and Manchester United, is considered one of the brightest prospects in Northern Ireland.

Madden has earned the nickname ‘Golden Child’ at the academy of his club Cliftonville and is expected to move to the Premier League in the future.

Arsenal are one of several top-flight clubs targeting Northern Irish players due to Brexit changing laws around signing youngsters from abroad.

Chelsea close in on £40m triple deal

In addition to reported interest in Karim Adeyemi, Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Basel defender Renato Veiga, as they press ahead with another transfer recruitment drive, writes Simon Collings.

The Blues have agreed a fee of around £11.8million for the 20-year-old from Portugal, who is due in London for a medical before signing a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are also in talks over deals for Boca Juniors centre-back Aaron Anselmino and Atlanta United left-back Caleb Wiley, both 19.

Veiga is a versatile defender who can play at both centre-back and full-back, while he has also played as a holding midfielder.
