'Total rubbish': France Football's top 50 managers of all time sparks debate

A list of the top 50 managers of all time had some fans scratching their heads after Arsene Wenger fell behind Jurgen Klopp in the pecking order.

Respected publication France Football compiled the list, placing current managers Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti alongside legends Rinus Michels, Sir Alex Ferguson, Johan Cruyff and Bill Shankly in the top 10.

Jose Mourinho earned 13th spot, while Zinedine Zidane – off the back of three straight Champions League titles in a row with Real Madrid – climbed in at 22.

But it was the ranking of Arsenal Legend Arsene Wenger bellow current Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp in the list that did not sit well with some fans.

Wenger also fell behind Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone.

The revolutionary Frenchman guided Arsenal to three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups in 22 years.

Wenger also helped steer Arsenal to an undefeated 2004 title, which hadn’t been achieved for 115 years, which resulted in the nickname the ‘Invincibles’.

Current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has won two German Bundesliga titles and the cup with Borussia Dortmund before joining Liverpool in 2015. He has not won a trophy with Liverpool.

Some fans turned to social media to express their shock.

France Football said the criteria was based on the number of trophies won, their influence on the game and their personality.

Dutch legend Michels, who topped the list, coached for 32 years with Ajax, Barcelona, FC Koln and the Los Angeles Aztecs.

He is widely credited for inventing ‘Total Football’ in the 1970s with Ajax.
