Tomic's latest bid to resurrect career falls flat

Bernard Tomic’s latest attempt to rejoin the ATP Tour’s elite has fallen at the first hurdle.

The much-maligned Aussie has been bundled out of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island in the first round.

Tomic won his spot in the main draw with qualifying victories over Austin Krajicek and Alessandro Bega before facing Dudi Sela of Israel, where he lost 6-3 1-6 6-2.

Joinining Tomic on the way out were fellow countrymen Alex Bolt and Alex de Minaur.

The 25-year-old from Murray Bridge was beaten 6-3 4-6 7-5 by American Christian Harrison in three tight sets.

Tournament No.7 seed de Minaur was involved in a titanic battle with Ivo Karlovic before being upset by the Croat, 6-7 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.

Karlovic used his serve to good effect when he sent down 19 aces to de Minaur’s five and won 85 per cent of points on his first serve.

Australian world No.52 John Millman is eyeing a deep run at the Swedish Open after mercilessly disposing of Guido Andreozzi 6-0 6-2 in the opening round.

Millman will face another Argentinian, Federico Delbonis, in the second round with a possible clash against enigmatic Italian Fabio Fognini for a place in the semi-finals on the cards should he be successful.

Elsewhere, Fernando Verdasco took three sets to dispatch Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego while there were also victories for Simone Bolelli, Thiago Monteiro and Gerald Melzer.

Former world No.3 and 2013 French Open finalist David Ferrer was leading Zdenek Kolar of the Czech Republic 3-2 when play was suspended due to rain.

Stosur surges into Swiss Open second round

Samantha Stosur has brushed aside 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-3 6-2 at the Swiss Open in Gstaad.

Stosur, who fell to the Italian at Roland Garros in her maiden grand slam decider eight years ago, will face local hope Patty Schnyder in the second round.

Schnyder, who has a 2-2 record against Stosur, advanced despite dropping the first set against Kathinka von Deichmann of Liechtenstein.

Elsewhere, France’s world No.48 Alize Cornet qualified for the second round on Tuesday after defeating world No.190 Silvia Soler Espinosa of Spain 6-2 6-2.

Cornet fired two aces but committed six double faults, compared with her Spanish opponent’s zero and two, respectively.

Evgeniya Rodina of Russia beat Carina Witthoeft of Germany 6-7 (7-3) 6-4 7-6 (13-11).

The 29-year-old is set to face Mona Barthel of Germany, who on Monday beat Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-4 3-6 6-2.
