Wearing face masks anytime you leave the house is the reality of modern life. But with that necessary accessory comes a certain makeup woe: smeared and smudged lipstick.
Wearing a mask over your nose and mouth obviously spells danger for your makeup. Not only are you breathing hot air into the mask and sealing in all that heat and moisture, but your mask is likely constantly rubbing against your features, often causing some serious makeup transfer. But, when it comes to lipstick, there may actually be a fix.
In the latest episode of Pretty Beautiful, video producer Lisa Azcona tries three drugstore lipsticks that TikTokers say are transfer-proof — and mask-proof. All options are under $12, making them super budget-friendly.
“Yes, I did pick the brightest colors I could find,” Lisa says. “I’m really determined to put these to the test.”
She tests formulas from three popular brands: Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lipcolor in All Night Fuchsia, Maybelline SuperStay 24 Color Liquid Lipstick in Non-Stop Orange and NYX Shine Sound Pro-Pigment Lip Shine in Perfect Berry.
Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lipcolor, $7.29 ($10.49)
After applying each lip color, Lisa makes it a point to rub the mask against her lips, providing a lot more movement and pressure than likely experienced while wearing a mask. And none of them transfer whatsoever.
Maybelline SuperStay 24 Color Liquid Lipstick, $7.98 (Orig. $9.99)
After rubbing the mask on her dark berry pout (courtesy of the NYX color), Lisa is especially shocked to see no transfer on the white mask interior.
“I’m sorry, what!?” she says. “I can’t make this up, people!”
The only residue left on the mask after each test is that of the gloss or the balm, which it seems to work like a protective barrier for all three of these lipsticks.
“I will say they weren’t the easiest to remove, so you’re going to need a little bit of patience and some good makeup remover to get them off your lips,” Lisa cautions.
Pro tip: Try an oil-based cleansing balm for easy removal.
