Jordan Thompson has set aside his disappointing first-round exit at the French Open to progress to the last 16 of the ATP's Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.

The Australian defeated Argentine Guido Pella 6-3 6-4 to set up a meeting with compatriot and No.4 seed Alex de Minaur, who received a bye, for a place in the quarter-finals.

World No.64 Thompson was dominant on first serve, winning 78 per cent of points.

James Duckworth is also through to the last 16 after a convincing 6-3 6-2 with over Adrian Mannarino.

Duckworth will now meet American Sam Querrey, who beat Altug Celikbilek 6-4 6-1.

Alexei Popyrin will try to make it a quartet of Australians in the last 16 when he takes on Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

Canada's Denis Shapovalov is the tournament's top seed.
