Jordan Thompson is through to the round of 16 at the ATP's Hall of Fame Open after opponent Cedrik-Marcel Stebel retired in the first set.

The world No.71 and seventh seed was leading 5-4 when the German withdrew.

Thompson, who will now meet Japan's Yuichi Sugita for a place in the quarter-finals, is in the bottom half of the draw headed by No.2 seed Sam Querrey.

There was also good news for compatriot Alex Bolt, who made the main draw after beating American Ryan Harrison 6-0 6-7 (7-2) 7-5 in qualifying.

Bolt will now meet wildcard Jack Sock, with the winner advancing to the last 16.

Also through is former US Open finalist Kevin Anderson, who clinched a routine first-round win over Illya Marchenko.

The South African claimed a 7-5 6-3 victory after being given a wildcard into the tournament where he is seeded eighth.

American duo Jenson Brooksby and Denis Kudla also made it through with successes over Evgeny Donskoy and Steve Johnson respectively.
