The key to enduring a hectic football schedule is planning, says Mamelodi Sundowns' fitness coach

Masandawana's fitness coach has shared some of the secrets behind the club's success of recent times

Mamelodi Sundowns' fitness coach Kabelo "KB" Rangoaga believes that adequate planning has been behind the club’s recent success.

Masandawana will for the fourth consecutive season undergo a strenuous Caf Champions League campaign which only adds to the workload as they already have Premier Soccer League (PSL) and Nedbank Cup matches to contend with.

But while the games are set to come in thick and fast, this doesn’t faze the Sundowns technical team who have the services of one of the country’s foremost fitness trainers to call upon.

"It's purely on proper planning. I mean, this is not new to us. You know what must be done and you just do it," Rangoaga told The Sowetan.

"Planning is the way. We plan a season ahead. We know how our programme looks like next month. You can choose any date and I will tell you what we are doing," he explained.

Rangoaga also stressed the importance of rest and with Sundowns not in action this weekend, he explains that several of the players have been given off in order to recuperate following their Nedbank Cup victory over Cape Town All Stars.

 "For example, our regulars have been off since Saturday after our match on Friday [against Cape Town All Stars]. They are coming back on Monday and we have a game on Wednesday (against Free State Stars)," he said.

"But you are resting them in anticipation that from next month you are going to have back-to-back games - Wednesday and Thursday again. You are thinking of Africa, because you are starting next month," he concluded.

The rest will certainly have come as a welcome break for Sundowns who on return have a hectic schedule ahead. The Brazilians are set to take on Free State Stars before clashing with cross-town rivals SuperSport United in the Tshwane Derby all in the space of seven days.
