The Daily Sweat: The Mets get to play at home, which should be fun

The New York Mets' feud against their fans drew plenty of think pieces, an angry scolding of the players from the GM for the "thumbs down" celebration and some classic New York headlines.

It has been entertaining, but in this space we're worried about winning bets.

What do we do with the Mets the rest of the season? Will this controversy spark them? Or just make them worse than they already are?

The first test comes Tuesday. The Mets are at home, finishing a suspended game against the Miami Marlins from April and then playing a regularly scheduled game. The odds on the full game weren't up at BetMGM on Tuesday morning due to the abbreviated first game, but the Mets will likely be significant favorites for the regular game. That's mostly due to the Marlins being hopeless since the trade deadline.

The Mets haven't been a ton better. They were in first place for most of the first half of the season but are now 63-67, seven games out of first in the NL East. It has mostly fallen apart. Jacob deGrom's injury issues didn't help. Hopefully you haven't been backing the Mets for the past month or so.

Funny enough, one thing the Mets excel at it as winning at home. They're 38-27 at home this season. It would be a very New York thing for this team to actually lock in and play better with all the tension going on inside their home stadium. It can't be ruled out.

For now, don't downgrade the Mets too much. They're still what they are, a rapidly fading team that shouldn't be trusted as a favorite in most spots. But keep an eye on how they react in home games the rest of the way. Those should be fun.

The Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants would be a fun playoff series. All four games against each other have been well played, fitting of their first-place records. The Brewers won 3-1 on Monday, and the second game is Tuesday night. The Giants are likely to be small favorites, and they should rebound on Tuesday.

The Los Angeles Dodgers jumped all over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night and held on for a 5-3 win. The Dodgers are playing as well as anyone and are -185 favorites on Tuesday. It seems it will be hard to bet against them the rest of the way, regardless of the opponent.

Who cashed tickets on Monday?

The Los Angeles Angels won as +155 underdogs against the New York Yankees, blowing a big lead and then taking it back late. The Yankees won 13 in a row, and then immediately lost three in a row. Baseball can be a tough sport to bet.

Most of Monday's MLB schedule was status quo, with most of the big favorites winning. It's hard to find live dogs after the trade deadline.

What is the best bet?

It's hard to trust the Philadelphia Phillies, but it's weird they're +100 underdogs at the Washington Nationals. The Nationals are 20 games under .500, starting Patrick Corbin and his 6.09 ERA. The Phillies play a soft schedule the rest of the way and they have faltered against bad teams recently, but if they're going to make a run it needs to happen soon. The Phillies are a fine pick as a small underdog against a bad Nats team.
