Australian tennis star Bernard Tomic has defended himself for getting a lap dance during Schoolies Week on the Gold Coast.

Tomic was photographed getting some special attention from two female dancers during his 21st birthday celebrations at the Sin City Nightclub last month.

A 'toolie' refers to an older person partying at Schoolies Week.

Speaking at the John Newcombe Medal in Melbourne on Monday night, Tomic said he couldn’t understand the fuss.

"I think everyone has to celebrate their birthday, I turned 21, so why not," Tomic told Channel 7.

"I had a two-week break and I know now there is a lot of hard work to do."

Tomic is no stranger to controversy, having had several run ins with the law and tennis officialdom in the past.

He has had a running battle with Gold Coast police over his expensive sports car, while he was temporarily banned from playing Davis Cup late last year after a fallout with captain Pat Rafter.

Tomic's father has been banned from attending tournaments this year after he allegedly attacked his son's hitting partner Thomas Drouet in May.

Tomic, the world No.51, will base himself in Melbourne in the lead up to January’s Australian Open.

He reached the third round at this year's Australian Open before being knocked out by Roger Federer.
