Hopman Cup officials backing Tomic

Hopman Cup director Steve Ayles believes Bernard Tomic will put his recent tanking controversy behind him when he takes the court in Perth next week.

Tomic will team up with Ashleigh Barty and launch Australia's campaign in the opening round against Germany next Saturday night.

The Hopman Cup will be a true test of Tomic's character after a string of controversies in recent months.

John McEnroe accused the 20-year-old of 'tanking' at the US Open in August after a second round loss to Andy Roddick, which Davis Cup captain Pat Rafter later described as "disgraceful."

Tomic later admitted to only giving "85 per cent" during a loss at the Shanghai Masters in which he capitulated to drop the last set 6-0.

But Ayles is adamant that WA fans will see a different Tomic during the Hopman Cup.

"There's no concern whatsoever," he said. "He knows that this is the start of a new year, it's time to put 2012 behind him and he knows he's got to give 100 per cent the whole time and I think that starts right here in Perth."

"This is the platform for him to show exactly what he has been doing in the off-season and that he is ready for this challenge. History tells us whenever he is presented with a challenge, he rises to it."

Ayles said he is confident the crowd would get behind Tomic when he takes on Tommy Haas, Novak Djokovic and Andreas Seppi, three opponents who are all ranked higher than him.

The Hopman Cup will be played with the Perth Arena roof open for the first time ever.

Why is this turkey given the time of day , let alone the chance to disgrace himself and Australia once again.

I really think it's time for his dad to perhaps be less dominant and leave coaching matters to a professional coach. Maybe Ferrero who ,I believe is now more interested in coaching . Good luck Bernard .keep trying!
