And the man whom the stadium is named after had a hilarious reaction to Federer's tears.

As the Swiss Maestro was breaking down, Rod Laver was seen capturing the wonderful moments on his phone!

Federer also paid tribute to opponent Marin Cilic, as well as the Australian people, after an incredible five-setter.

"This is a dream come true, the fairytale continues for me," he said.

"After the great year last year, it’s incredible. I would like to thank Marin another great tournament, congratulations on world number three.

"That's a hell of an achievement and I wish you all the best. Keep doing what you are doing and you will achieve more.

"It has been a long journey but very much worthwhile. We had the best time as a family and as a team. So thank you very much for just making it so special.

"Like Marin said, you guys are unbelievable as a country and people."

Speaking to Jim Courier and Hamish McLachlan after the match, Federer opened up about the rare display of emotion.

“I was just so relieved when everything was said and done — I think I felt the same way tonight. That is why I couldn’t speak, it was terrible,” he said.

Federer is suddenly within sight of the grand slam title record after entering uncharted waters with a historic sixth Australian Open triumph.

The insatiable Swiss became the first man ever to capture 20 grand slam singles crowns with a fighting 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 3-6-1 victory over Marin Cilic in Sunday night's championship decider at Melbourne Park.
