Federer giggles over incredible luck on botched point

Even when things are going wrong they seem to go right for Roger Federer.

The Swiss great was up a set and on serve in the second set of his fourth-round match against Hungary's Marton Fucsovics when the Rod Laver Arena crowd was brought to their feet with a spectacular point.

On the sixth shot of the rally Federer's forehand was off by just enough to send the ball flying into the air off his frame.

The reigning champion almost conceded the point as both players waited... and waited... and waited for it to come down after a mammoth five seconds.

But it bounced so high upon its return into the atmosphere that Fucsovics' slam was predictable, and Federer sent it back with a backhand at full stretch.

A soft slam by the Hungarian to Federer's forehand was also sent back for another to his backhand, and then Fucsovics tried to end the farce that was the point.

Only his volley crashed into the net, and he lost the point.

Federer raised both arms in triumph as the crowd cheered and Fucsovics lamented how unlucky he had to be to miss the volley.

"Federer is giggling like a schoolboy after that point," Jim Courier said in commentary.

Fucsovics did manage to win the game despite the 0-30 hole, and he went on take the world No.2 to a tiebreak.

Federer took it 7-3 to take a two-set lead and put one foot in the quarter-finals.
