Kyrgios overcomes bizarre distractions to win

Nick Kyrgios has battled hecklers and helicopters, as well as opponent Viktor Troicki, in his second round Australian Open victory.

The Aussie moved into the third round with a straight-sets win over Troicki on Wednesday night, prevailing 7-5, 6-4, 7-6.

Playing on the so-called 'People's Court' Hisense Arena, which is known for its loud atmosphere, Kyrgios would not have been expecting as much noise as he had to deal with.

It all started early in the second set when an unruly spectator disrupted play with some strange antics.

Kyrgios was forced to stop his service motion as the fan filmed himself bellowing around the quiet arena, before he was escorted out by security.

And just two games later a helicopter provided a similar distraction, hovering over Hisense for almost the entire set.

"This is strange," Roger Rasheed said courtside.

"It's just hovering above us and not moving.

"I have never seen this before at a stadium anywhere in the world."

The distractions seemed to infuriate Kyrgios, who was further riled up at the end of the set when the PA system began playing up.

However commentators commended the young Aussie for not letting the distractions derail him as he cruised through the first two sets.

He suffered a hiccup when he was broken while serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set, before bouncing back to prevail in the tiebreaker.

"It was a strange one; it was tough with a lot of things going on," Kyrgios said.

"I know that Vik is a fighter and I knew I had to stick to my guns.

"He broke me back when I was serving for the match and I started freaking out and I just kind of tried to hold serve and tried to work it out in the breaker.

"I got lucky but it was tough match and I am happy to get through."

Kyrgios set up the win on the back of some booming forehands and another superb serving display, barrelling down 17 aces and only dropping only 11 points on his first serves landed.

Troicki's first break point didn't come until the second game of the third set, but the 31-year-old - who eliminated Aussie wildcard Alex Bolt in five sets in round one - was unable to convert.

Kyrgios nailed the first set with an ace and then backed it up to break Troicki in the first game of the second.

The dogged Troicki however refused to lay down, setting up the intriguing finale to the match.

Kyrgios has only face next opponent Jo-Wilfred Tsonga once previously, with the Frenchman securing the win last year in Marseille in three sets.

Tsonga, 32, made the Open final back in 2008, which he lost to Novak Djokovic.

Kyrgios said Tsonga was one of his "idols" and he would be up for the challenge.

"He is a good friend of mine," the home hope said.

"We played one time and it was a close three-set battle so I am looking forward to it."

Kyrgios is the last Aussie man in the draw after John Millman and Matt Ebden both lost on Wednesday.
