Shapovalov's hilarious battle with Aus Open bananas

After Coco Vandeweghe's bizarre blow-up on Monday, the Australian Open bananas have been the undoing of another player.

Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov lost a heartbreaker to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Wednesday, blowing a 5-2 fifth set lead.

Appearing at his first Australian Open and third grand slam, world No.50 Shapovalov looked to be cruising when he claimed the third set in just 26 minutes.

But Tsonga, 14 years Shapovalov's senior and with almost 600 more career matches to his name, found his serve in the fourth set to send the match to a decider, before staging his stirring fifth set comeback.

Throughout Shapovalov's first and second set matches, he engaged in a hilarious running battle with the bananas provided for player sustenance.

On Monday he was filmed struggling to open a number of them during a change of ends, tossing one on the ground in disgust before pumping his fist when he finally managed to crack one open.

However he had no such troubles on Wednesday because he got the ballboys to open them for him.

"He's got a great forehand and backhand, but banana opening is not his strong suit," Geoff Masters said in commentary.

The teenager reportedly churns through dozens of bananas during a match, and it certainly shows in his energetic displays.

And he's not the only player who loves them, with Vandeweghe refusing to take the court in the second set of her first round match until she'd had one.

The volatile American received one of the strangest code violations ever for time wasting over it.
