Coco accused of ugly slur as war of words erupts

It wasn't just a lack of bananas that had American world No.9 Coco Vandeweghe seething on a horror opening day at the Australian Open.

After crashing in straight sets to No. 51 ranked Timea Babos, Vandeweghe entered into a war of words with her opponent, who she accused of being too "in your face with her c’mons”.

And the fiery American was quick to let the umpire know exactly what she thought about it.

However her Hungarian opponent was having none of Vandeweghe's complaints, saying that's just always how she plays.

"If she would have looked at my matches I’m always like this. It’s never against my opponent, it was never to her face, it was to my box or when it was an incredible point it was to the crowd,” Babos said.

"It was not against her, it’s against my personality. I’m crazy on court but not in a negative way, I’m just like this.”

But Babos wasn't done there, returning serve at the American, and referencing an alleged insult which social media users widely reported.

Reporters and fans on Twitter were saying Vandeweghe said something along the lines of “f*** off you f***ing b***h,” in relation to her opponent during one of the more fierce moments in the match.

Vandeweghe was handed a code violation for the incident which also involved her smashing her racquet against the ground. (Watch in the video at the top of the page)

“She always does that (loses her temper),” Babos said.

“A couple of racquets are broken every match, this time it was I believe a time violation, but I’m not sure. The second one I believe was an insult against me. If the umpire heard it then it must have been this.

“I was 0-40 in that game then I came back and I think it was an important moment. You don’t get a point penalty immediately so I think it must have been bad.

"Even after the first set she was sitting for 10 minutes and I didn’t know what was happening but I tried to stay focused and not to buy the big things happening around (Vandeweghe).

"You’re prepared with her — anything can happen.

"Certain players do it on purpose. Maybe her emotions are not always like that so she doesn’t do it on purpose but still it distracts you and it’s just bad.

“If someone insults me I don’t think it’s not on purpose so this has to be like that but as I said she always does this — she has a lot of emotions, it’s difficult to control it.

“I hope she doesn’t do it on purpose.”

Vandeweghe had a message for her fans after the disappointing Australian Open performance, saying her ill-health was at fault.

The American had been suffering from a severe flu in the lead up to the Australian Open, and unsuccessfully attempted to have a delayed start to the tournament.

Vandeweghe's match was never going to end well, after a fiery argument with the chair umpire due to a lack of bananas on court after the first set tiebreak.

She refused to take the court for the second because she didn't have a banana waiting for her when she came off court.

"I'm waiting for the bananas," she told chair umpire Fergus Murphy when asked what she was doing.

"Why should I feel uncomfortable because the court is ill-prepared?"

Vandeweghe went on for about 60 seconds about why she couldn't continue without her potassium.

She eventually got her bananas and got back on court, but not before she received a code violation for time wasting.

Vandeweghe crashed out 6-7, 2-6, joining fellow American big guns Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens as shock losers.

Unfortunately it's not the first time we've Vandeweghe melt down on the court.

She's known for her racquet smashes and had a fairly big blow up at Wimbledon last year.
