Milos Raonic withdraws from US Open after surgery

The US Open has lost another big name as world No.11 Milos Raonic pulls out from the tournament.

The Canadian revealed on Thursday he had an operation to fix his problematic wrist after it did not respond to regular treatment.

"I have tried everything in my power to rehabilitate this injury in time for the US Open in order to play an event that is so truly special to me," he wrote on Instagram.

"However, the pain is too great and, in consultation with my doctors, I am left with no option but to withdraw from the event.

"Today, I underwent a procedure to remove portions of the bone that have been causing the discomfort and preventing me from being able to play the way I normally can.

"I have too much respect for the US Open and my fellow competitors to take a spot in the draw when I know I cannot give full effort due to this injury."

Raonic has already started his post-surgery rehab and has not ruled out returning to the court in 2017.

But he is the latest seed to pull out of the last grand slam of the year, with Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori already absent.

World No.2 Andy Murray has not played since Wimbledon due to a hip injury but is in New York and expects to play.

Marin Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, has also been on the sidelines since losing to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final and is yet to declare his intentions.
