Murray's mum makes shock retirement call

Judy Murray has made a stunning prediction about son Andy's immediate playing future.

Andy has been out injured since losing to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon last month and will lose his World No.1 billing to Rafael Nadal when the next rankings are released on Monday.

NERVOUS NADAL: Rafa still haunted by hilarious Wimbledon mishap

Murray withdrew from the Montreal Masters last week and is not playing in this week's Cincinatti Masters, battling to overcome a hip injury in time for the upcoming US Open.

The Scot rocketed to the top of the rankings after an incredible 2016 in which he won Wimbledon, an Olympic gold medal and the ATP Tour Finals.

He also made the final of the Australian Open and French Open, but has been unable to replicate the same form this year.

He has battled numerous injuries and poor in 2017, falling in the fourth round in Melbourne before losing in the semis at Roland Garros and the quarters at the All England Club.

And according to his mum, he probably won't be around very much longer.

"The thing that worries me now is that Andy may not play for much longer," Judy said recently.

"He has been around for 12 years playing at the top of the game."

The 30-year-old is younger than fellow 'Big Four' rivals Roger Federer (36) and Rafael Nadal (31), and just a week older than Novak Djokovic, but might be the first to hang up his racquet.

However he still hopes to fit for the final grand slam of the year at Flushing Meadows.

"Unfortunately I won't be playing in Cincinnati as I continue my recovery. I always enjoy playing there and I look forward to returning next year," Murray said.

"I'm continuing to work hard on the court with the aim of being in New York."

Djokovic has already been ruled out for the remainder of 2017, as has Kei Nishikori, while Stan Wawrinka is out of the US Open.
