Federer overcome with emotion after record Wimbledon triumph

Roger Federer burst into tears as the enormity of his eighth Wimbledon crown hit home after beating Marin Cilic in the final.

A month shy of his 36th birthday, Federer eclipsed the record he shared with legends Pete Sampras and Wlliam Renshaw with a crushing 6-3 6-1 6-4 triumph over wounded Clic to become the oldest champion at The All England Club since 1930.

EIGHTH AND LAST? Federer coy on Wimbledon swansong

As the Swiss great was sitting at his chair waiting for the post-match ceremony, he simply could not hold back the tears.

With his wife, two sets of identical twins, mother, father and sister all in the stands, Federer wept tears of joy after penning the latest remarkable chapter of his storied career.

Federer's stirring victory ended a five-year Wimbledon title wait and came 14 years after he first reigned on London's hallowed lawns in 2003.

Incredibly, after needing six months off after sustaining a career-threatening knee injury in last year's semi-final loss to Milos Raonic, Federer now holds two grand slam trophies for the first time since 2009.

"It's disbelief that I can reach such heights," Federer said.

"I was never sure if I was going to be back here in another final, but I always believed that I could come back and do it again.

"It means the world to me, just feeling great and holding the trophy."
