Novak Djokovic's incredible sportsmanship in defeat

World No.2 Novak Djokovic was all praise for Alexander Zverev after the 20-year-old pulled off a stunning victory to win the Italian Open.

Zverev signalled his anticipated arrival among the tennis elite by defeating Djokovic 6-4 6-3 on Monday morning.

Djokovic went into the match a red-hot favourite but watched on as Zverev became the youngest player to win a Masters 1000 event since Djokovic won in Miami a decade ago at 19.

But rather than wallow in defeat, Djokovic chose to use the occasion to show some wonderful sportsmanship towards his opponent.

After Zverev clinched the title, Djokovic met him at the net with a thumbs up, a massive hug and some words of congratulations.

He was quick to applaud his conqueror in the post-match speech, calling Zverev's win "absolutely deserved".

But he added: "On the other hand, I mean, he didn't get much from my side. I played very poor today. Just couldn't find any rhythm."

Despite a clinical straight sets win over Austrian Dominic Thiem on Saturday, Djokovic produced a flawed performance, racking up 27 unforced errors to 14 for Zverev, who also had 16 winners to the Serb's 11.

It wasn't the only touching moment from the Rome event.

Rafael Nadal also showed some brilliant grace in defeat against Dominic Thiem, as well as coming to the aid of injured opponent Nicolas Almagro earlier in the tournament.
