Tennis great reveals vile treatment from Nastase

A female tennis great has spoken out about the vile treatment she received from under-fire Ilie Nastase when she was a teenager.

The Romania Fed Cup captain was thrown out of the World Group II playoff against Great Britain on Saturday after swearing at officials, GB captain Anne Keothavong and world No.7 Johanna Konta.

Former world No.1 Nastase was heard to call Keothavong and Konta "f***ing bitches" after the British team complained about calls from the crowd during points, treatment which saw Konta burst into tears on court.

Nastase has been provisionally suspended from all ITF events pending an investigation and is sure to face severe punishment.

The controversy has seen Aussie fan favourite Pam Shriver reveal Nastase badgered her about her sex life during her teenage years.

"In my first two years on the tour, I recall right when I was around my final US Open at 16, when I saw Ilie Nastase for the next four to five years, anytime I saw him at any tournament he would ask me the same question," Shriver told BBC 5live Radio.

"It was 'Are you still a virgin?' I'm a teenager, I'm playing the tour and it was a shocking thing. I'd never had anybody ask me that before.

"He was a known jokester and he did it in a joking way but I can remember as I got older — I was about 20 and it must have been the 30th time he asked me that same question — I just said, 'Would you please stop, would you stop asking me that'.

"Sort of to his credit, he never asked me again. I set a firm boundary and he stopped."

Shriver says she believes Nastase's career as a tennis official is over.

"You want the punishment to match the crime and he behaved really badly," Shriver said.

"I think it has all gone too far. I think it is over now, I think he is done as a coach, certainly in any formal setting.

"Everybody has a couple of different sides to their personality and certainly not all of Ilie Nastase is evil and mean and sexist. But unfortunately he does not have a filter and there is a side that is, so he can't coach women players any more."

Nastase was already being investigated by the ITF for an apparently racist remark about Serena Williams' unborn baby on Friday, the two-time grand slam champion having said: "Let's see what colour it has. Chocolate with milk?"

However the 70-year-old is refusing to apologise for any of his actions, telling the Daily Mirror: "I don't regret it and they can send me to prison if they want - I don't care.

"I was just trying to promote the interest of my girl. The English player just stormed off without even asking permission to leave the court and I admit that's when I called her a bitch.

"She kept trying to keep the crowd quiet - but it's not an opera it's a game.

"I don't need this bullsh*t. I'm 70 years old. I don't even get paid for being team captain. I don't give a sh*t if they fine me or don't let me sit in the captain's chair.

"Remember I was world number one. If you throw someone out who was a world number one, it's not good for tennis."
