Rafael Nadal made sure the shot of the Australian Open happened in the final, stunning Roger Federer with an impossible running forehand winner.

Trailing two sets to one late in Sunday night's final, Nadal played out a rally of epic proportions with Federer.

Just when it seemed the Swiss Maestro had finally put the Spanish bull away, Nadal pulled off a stunning sliced forehand shot across court that Federer could only watch in stunned amazement.

The Rod Laver Arena crowd erupted and rose as one, with commentators initially lost for words.

Todd Woodbridge finally summed it up: "It just went to another level!"

The remarkable shot helped Nadal take the fourth set and send it to a fifth, but Federer went on to claim his 18th career grand slam title.
