Konta sets up quarter-final date with Serena

Johanna Konta will face Serena Williams in a quarter-final on Wednesday after defeating Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets.

The No.8 seed dominated the first set before Makarova raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second.

The Brit pulled the No.30 seed back and would win the final five games of the match for a 6-1 6-4 victory on Margaret Court Arena.

Konta secured the win in just 68 minutes despite needing to come from behind in the second set.

"I'm really happy to have come through that," Konta said after the win over the Russian.

"I think I came out playing at a higher level than she did but she was really able to pull herself back into that match and made it really difficult for me.

"There really wasn't much in that set. I didn't actually think I did too much wrong, she really just started playing some incredible tennis so I just tried to continue trusting myself and really enjoy myself."

Konta won 80 per cent of the points on her first serve and recorded nine aces.

The 25-year-old is already relishing the opportunity to take on the champion Williams.

"Believe it or not that's actually an incredible experience for me," Konta said.

"She's one of the few players who's still playing who I watched growing up.

"As a young girl wanting to be a professional tennis player, it's honestly an incredible honour and I can't wait to share the court with her."

Williams booked her path when she secured a straight-sets victory over Barbora Strycova in the first match of the day on Rod Laver Arena.

The No.2 seed exchanged early breaks with No.16 seed Strycova in the first set before settling to take out a 7-5 6-4 victory.

Temperatures had already pushed beyond 35 degrees, making it difficult for either player to force the issue.

It took eight set points for Williams to secure the first set, with the crucial point tricking Strycova off the net cord.

The six-time champion then saw a 4-1 lead in the second set reduced at 5-4 but the American broke her Czech opponent to win the match.

Williams hit only 45 per cent of her first serves and conceded four breaks, though she broke Strycova's serve six times.

The World No.2 said she relished the opportunity to become the hunted after No.1 Angelique Kerber was dumped out of the tournament in a loss to Coco Vandeweghe on Sunday night.

"I love pressure. I feel like I deal well with pressure and I love the game," Williams told Channel 7 after the win.

"I love being out here. Honestly, I have nothing to lose. I've won enough. I'm out here to have fun and play in front of this great crowd so it's a bonus.

"Everything is a bonus for me right now, it's relaxing."

Elsewhere, Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni is the lowest-ranked player in the Australian Open quarter-finals after defeating qualifier Jennifer Brady.

The world No.79 earned a straight-forward 6-4 6-2 win over the qualifier on Margaret Court Arena, taking one hour and 10 minutes to progress.

It is the 34-year-old's first quarter-finals appearance in 18 years when she reached the Wimbledon semi-finals as a teenager.
