'Let's go Roger!': Wawrinka handles awkward cheer

Stan Wawrinka lived in the shadow of Swiss countryman Roger Federer for almost a decade before coming of age when he won the 2014 Australian Open.

Despite the fact that he made a name for himself at Melbourne Park, it seems the 31-year-old still needs to win some fans over.

Serving to go up 3-2 in the third set of his straight-sets victory over Andreas Seppi in the fourth round on Sunday, a member of the crowd stepped up to give him some encouragement.

"Let's go Roger!"

Although it took him a second to process what was said, Wawrinka hardly missed a step in responding to the fan.

"He's not here, he's on Rod Laver," pointing over his head towards the larger arena.

The crowd at Margaret Court Arena laughed at the awkward exchange before Wawrinka won the point with a serve that Seppi could only return into the net.

The fan will have at least one more chance to cheer for Roger after the Swiss great defeated No.5 seed Kei Nishikori in five sets on Sunday night.

He produced this epic around-the-net winner early in the fourth before securing a quarter-final against unseeded surprise packet Mischa Zverev.
