Barty, Tomic sent packing from Australian Open

Australia are down to a single remaining hope after Ashleigh Barty and Bernard Tomic were ousted in the third round.

Dan Evans won his third round encounter with Tomic 7-5 7-6 7-6 to go to the round of 16 at a grand slam for the first time in his career, while Barty lost to Mona Barthel 6-4 3-6 6-3.

Tomic's exit leaves the host country without a second-week hope in the men's singles for the first time in three years, while Daria Gavrilova is the lone woman left.

The victory was also more sweet revenge for Evans after Tomic's father John once said Evans wasn't even good enough to grace the practice court with his son.

BIZARRE: Why Evans had to wear a $20 shirt against Tomic

He becomes the first Brit not named Andy Murray to reach the fourth round at the Open since Tim Henman 15 years ago.

The former junior squash star was overjoyed with his watershed win.

"It was tough. Bernie is difficult. He's unorthodox," Evans said.

"I'm happy to come through and in three tight sets. It could have gone either way. I was just focusing on the end goal the entire time.

"I should say thank you to the crowd. It was a great atmosphere. It made the match way better."

Barty put in a spirited display at a packed Rod Laver Arena over two hours on Friday night but lost to the qualifier.

The Queenslander, resuming her grand-slam career after a dalliance with cricket, had already produced her best performance at a major by reaching the last 32 and with a surge in the rankings to come.

The match was hers to lose when she claimed an early break in the third set.

In her comeback Australian Open, nerves got the better of the 20-year-old, as she gave away the ascendancy.
