'Put a sock in it': Crowd turns on American after umpire altercation

The Australian Open crowd loudly criticised Jack Sock after the American youngster was hit with a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Sock was down two sets to love against Jo-Wilfied Tsonga on Friday when he got into a verbal battle with a linesman.

The linesman reported Sock to the chair umpire, who promptly warned the World No.20.

Sock then turned his anger at chair umpire Fergus Murphy, calling him "the worst ref on tour".

"He's obviously got a problem with the linesman but what I do know is that you're not going to win any points by intimidating a linesman and you're not gonna get any decisions changed," Roger Rasheed said in commentary.

"Did that umpire make a massive impact in what was going on out there? Not at all.

"There was frustration with the fact that he lost the second set and he was taking that out on somebody else and it just happened to be the linesman."

The crowd immediately turned on Sock, with one spectator throwing out the hilarious line "put a Sock in it!"

Just moments later Sock lowered himself even further with the crowd, challenging a call the same linesman made against him before mockingly giving him a big thumbs up.

"You want the win to go with the linesman don't you?" Rasheed said.

"Everyone in the stadium does too."

And much to their delight Sock got it wrong, the ball proving to be out as the linesman had called.

Tsonga went on to win in four sets to send Sock packing.

It wasn't the only bizarre moment of the match, with these bickering spectators holding up play:
