Australian Open Day 5 recap: Big guns keep firing

11:30pm: Muguruza marches into last 16

It took Garbine Muguruza just 64 minutes to move into the last-16 of the Australian Open at Anastasija Sevastova's expense on Friday night.

Muguruza avenged her loss to the Latvian in last year's US Open with a 6-4 6-2 win on Margaret Court Arena.

The Spaniard hit 20 winners in the third-round match, booking a date with Sorana Cirstea in the next round.

11:00pm: Federer winds back the clock

The Roger Federer of old was on display at Melbourne Park on Friday night as the Swiss Maestro swept past Tomas Berdych and into the round of 16.

World No.10 Berdych was completely wiped off the court by a vintage Federer display, Roger winning 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 in 90 minutes.

10:30pm: Nishikori marches on

Japanese No.1 Kei Nishikori is into the last 16 for the sixth-straight year, dispatching third-round opponent Lucas Lacko in straight sets.

Nishikori hit 46 winners on Friday night in a 6-4 6-4 6-4 defeat of the Slovakian in two hours and 11 minutes.

9:30pm: Aussies ousted

Australia are down to a single remaining hope after Ashleigh Barty and Bernard Tomic were ousted in the third round.

Dan Evans won his third round encounter with Tomic 7-5 7-6 7-6 to go to the round of 16 at a grand slam for the first time in his career, while Barty lost to Mona Barthel 6-4 3-6 6-3.

Tomic's exit leaves the host country without a second-week hope in the men's singles for the first time in three years, while Daria Gavrilova is the lone woman left.

7:10pm: Venus easily advances

Venus Williams has made easy work of China's Ying-Ying Duan to advance to the fourth round.

The American dominated the match, taking it 6-1 6-0.

6:00pm: Wawrinka pulls through

2014 champion Stan Wawrinka has progressed safely into the fourth round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

The fourth seed recovered from a slow start on Friday to overcome Serbian Viktor Troicki 3-6 6-2 6-2 7-6 (9-7).

5:45pm: Murray marches on

World No.1 Andy Murray remains on track for an elusive Australian Open crown after downing Sam Querrey in straight sets for a place in the last 16.

On Hisense Arena on Friday, Murray saw off the American 31st seed's challenge in one hour and 59 minutes, winning 6-4 6-2 6-4.

With long-time Open adversary Novak Djokovic losing in the second round, Murray is an odds-on favourite to claim his first title at Melbourne Park.

5:45pm: Tsonga sizzles past Sock

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has secured his place in the fourth round of the with a victory over American Jack Sock.

Tsonga prevailed 7-6 7-5 6-7 6-3 and benefited from some frustration to Sock, who had a run-in with the umpires in the second set.

He's a chance of facing Bernard Tomic in the next round.

5:00pm: Seppi still kicking

Kyrgios conqueror Andreas Seppi has continued into the fourth round after another come-from-behind victory, this time over Steve Darcis.

Italy's world No.89 won 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (7-2) on Friday to be the first man through to the fourth round.

3:30pm: Kuznetsova holds off Jankovic in epic

Eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova has defeated Jelena Jankovic in an epic three-set clash at the Australian Open.

The two-time grand slam champion was pushed to the limit on Friday by former world No.1 Jankovic but prevailed in a marathon third set, claiming a 4-6 7-5 9-7 victory in three hours and 36 minutes.

3:00pm: Kerber marches on

Defending champion Angelique Kerber has advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open after seeing off Kristyna Pliskova in straight sets.

The German world No.1 blitzed through the opening set in just 20 minutes and resisted a late fightback to claim a 6-0 6-4 victory on Friday.

2:30pm: Genie scolded by hot Coco

American Coco Vandeweghe has stormed back from the brink to defeat Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard in a gruelling three-set clash at the Australian Open.

Vandeweghe trailed 4-2 in the deciding set but powered home to claim a 6-4 3-6 7-5 victory over the 2014 semi-finalist in two hours and 22 minutes on Friday.
