Tomic dragged into cocaine scandal

Australian tennis star Bernard Tomic has been dragged into the Queensland sport cocaine scandal.

According to News Corp, a teenage girl claims Tomic told her he had $50,000 worth of cocaine while they were at Gold Coast nightclub baron Jamie Pickering’s penthouse.

The allegation has emerged in court documents as to why Pickering was made to stand trial for allegedly supplying cocaine to minors.

Tomic and Pickering are said to have been friends for years since Tomic started being spotted at Pickering’s nightclubs, while Pickering regularly attends Tomic’s tennis matches.

“If it was said, I know it was in jest. I know for a fact he doesn’t touch anything or even go near it. She says he said that — it’s just a joke and it’s obviously gone the wrong way,” Pickering told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

Pickering has been trying to contact Tomic to let him know he was mentioned in the public court document: “It will be a bit of a surprise to him to be honest.”

The owner of Varsity and Sin City nightclubs has been charged with four counts of supplying cocaine, two of which were to minors.

However it is understood that no charge had ever been considered against Tomic.

Magistrate Ron Kilner said one of the teenage girls said no one identified the white powder to her as drugs or cocaine.

“The only exception to that statement was when Bernard Tomic stated to her on one occasion that he had $50,000 worth of cocaine,” Mr Kilner said in the decision.

“It is however readily apparent that the powder was thought by her as some sort of illicit drug, even though she also had no experience in illicit drugs."

Tomic was famously photographed getting a lap-dance in Sin City during Schoolies celebrations in 2013.

The claims against Tomic come after Queensland Reds star Karmichael Hunt was suspended for six weeks and fined $30,000 (on top of a $2500 court fine) by the ARU for cocaine possession.

Several current and former Gold Coast Titans players, including State of Origin stars Greg Bird and Dave Taylor, have pleaded not guilty to their charges.
